Gary Gygax, the 'father' of D&D has died age 69. I guess there are many gamers out there now who owe their interest to D&D or one of its offspring and its probably fair to say D&D is the great grand-daddy of all current Fantasy related gaming.
Competition for GW? World of Warcraft MiniaturesGame has been announced for late 2008. It provides pre-painted collectible characters with the option to later scale up to slightly larger battles. At first glance the minis are not that detailed and the game seems to be aimed at one on one and small skirmish games. I cannot see it as a competitior to GW in terms of pure gaming but I think it will be a blow. I think GW has missed a trick with skirmish games like Mordheim and Necromunda, even 40K starter games. Why not provide them as pre-paints. How many starter sets and figures do i see on Ebay because no-one has the time to paint all the figures? Newbies just want to play the game. I can see WOW sucking away a percentage of these newbies from GW games and they will never get into the full hobby. I don't have time to paint up a lot of figures so if a pre-paint Mordheim or the like game out I'd buy tomorrow!
